Heaney Country & The A6 – Let’s go for Win-Win!

On Tuesday 27th June, Mr. Chris Murphy an environmentalist, returns to court in Belfast to appeal the decision to proceed with routing the A6 through an environmentally sensitive area, home to Whooper swans, Bewick Swans and Golden Plovers (Annex 1 SPA qualifying species). It is also the location of Anahorish, the Brough Road, and many of the locations which inspired and shaped Seamus Heaney – the poet and the man.
The need to upgrade the road between Derry and Belfast is not in question. It is much needed and it is long overdue. While an alternative exists which is to route the road through a brown field site of a disused aerodrome, isn’t that the right thing to do? Wouldn’t that be win-win for all of us, and for the generations to come, so that the pristine landscape remains, the birds’ habitat is uncontested and road users get what they need.
We have a collective responsibility both to future generations and the international community for the land and the literature of this inspiring habitat. Let’s do the right thing,

“narcissus” by C. Murray

Poethead

narcissus

not step twice into, not
  step back from stream.
     its nets are storm blackened,

narcissus’ flower is a cut out.
it has shut in the cold,
 skeining back into the bud.

 echo and,
         outbreath

he skeins back his thread
   the blind buds are always.

 step

       (not-step)
  back then.

 step

      (not-step)
  back then,

back from the black river nets.

“Consumed” and other poems by Gillian Hamill

Poethead

Clarity

So still
It had to
Come to the fore

I could feel
The tears drop
And drip down
On to my leg
Fully-formed droplets
I could count rain

In the still
Stilled mind forge chatter
The sadness had nowhere to go
But out.

Canal Walk Home

What is it
About the power
of the water
To heal hurts

Three lads sit on the boardwalk
They hardly look like delicate sorts.
And yet they gaze out
Contemplate
The rushing rippling mottles of the
Undulating lake
Can soothe souls.

Car lights are reflected in
Striking streaks, always dappling
Buzzy thrill of
Modern pyrotechnics
In the most basic of
Science laws.

Edged by banking sycamore leaves
I took one and put it in my pocket
To describe it better.
The smell of its earthy salt and bark
Present.
And the bare elegance
Of stripped black branches
Spearing themselves into the night…
